Four Seasons Tokyo at Otemachi: worth every yen

★★★★★
5.0/5

This is the hotel I recommend most often in Tokyo, and the one nobody has ever come back unhappy from. If you are picking one splurge night on your trip, spend it here.

Why it's a 5

Tokyo has plenty of five-star hotels. Most of them are very good and slightly interchangeable. This one is not, for a simple reason: it makes the room itself the reason to stay in.

Every room faces the city through floor-to-ceiling glass, and the bathtub sits right beside it. You can lie in the bath at night with the whole of Tokyo lit up in front of you. It sounds like a small thing. It is the thing every guest talks about afterwards.

The room

Entry-level rooms start around 45㎡, which is enormous by Tokyo standards — most five-stars here start at 35㎡. The layout puts the bed facing the window, so you wake up to the skyline rather than a wall.

The bathroom is the star. Twin basins, a walk-in rain shower, and a deep soaking tub positioned against the glass. Robes are proper weight, not thin waffle. Bring a bath salt from a convenience store and the evening plans itself.

Breakfast

Better than it needs to be. Fruit, yoghurt and granola done properly, alongside a Japanese set and a full à la carte menu. Take it in the room if you have a view — it costs nothing extra and it's the best half hour of the stay.

The spaces downstairs

The bar and lounge are genuinely worth an evening — low lighting, deep chairs, and the same view from a different angle. There is a library-style corridor that looks like a private club and is one of the most photographed corners of the hotel.

The spa and pool are among the best in Tokyo. If you have been walking twelve kilometres a day for a week, factor in two hours here. It will change how the rest of the trip feels.

Honest verdict

What makes it worth it

  • The bathtub-with-a-view. Nothing else in Tokyo does it this well.
  • Rooms are unusually large for the city.
  • Direct underground access to Otemachi Station — no rain, no stairs.
  • Seven minutes' walk to the Shinkansen at Tokyo Station.
  • Excellent spa and pool, which most Tokyo hotels lack.
  • Staff who fix things before you notice them.

What to know first

  • Otemachi is a business district. Quiet and safe, but dead at street level after 9pm.
  • Little casual dining nearby — plan dinners elsewhere.
  • Expensive. From about ¥120,000 a night.
  • Not the choice if you want an old-Tokyo, traditional feel.
  • Ask for a high floor. A low floor loses most of the point.

Who I book this for. Honeymoons, milestone birthdays, and anyone whose trip continues to Kyoto by Shinkansen — the station is a short walk, so your first and last mornings are effortless. If you want atmosphere and old streets instead, I'd send you to Asakusa or a ryokan.
