Day 1: Tokyo

You will check into the hotel in the vibrant night life area of Akasaka, conveniently located near several metro stations. The tour will officially begin with a ‘welcome dinner’ of tasty Japanese cuisine in the Marunouchi area overlooking Tokyo Train Station.

Day 2: Tokyo Sightseeing

Start the day with a stroll through the tranquil, inner city forest leading to the magnificent Meiji Shrine before heading into Harajuku and the heart of youth culture and shopping, with stops for interesting shopping opportunties. In the afternoon there will be a visit to a Japanese paper shop and the chance to try your hand at a traditional craft.

Day 3: Tokyo Sightseeing

Viewing cherry blossoms will be the focus of the morning walking along the Chidorigafuchi moat of the Imperial Palace and then through the East Garden of the palace.  After lunch there will be a traditional green tea service in a tranquil and beautiful private garden.  Then it’s on to Shibuya, for some free shopping time in one of the busiest, most vibrant, & colourful districts known for fashion & culture, neon signs & giant video screens, & of course the famous Shibuya ‘scramble’ intersection.

Day 4: Tokyo Sightseeing

Start the day at the Tokyo Edo Museum, an architectural sight as well as an amazing showcase of the history of Tokyo.  From there you will go the bustling Ameyoko market streets of Ueno and have time to relax under the cherry blossoms at Ueno Park.  Then it’s on to the tourist mecca of Asakusa to see the magnificent Sensouji Buddhist Temple.  Here you will have free time to enjoy wandering market style arcades of traditional Japanese souvenirs and crafts & find treasures in the world’s largest cookware market.

Day 5: Hakone

After departing Tokyo by bullet train the tour will move to Kanagawa Prefecture where there will be a half day of sightseeing in the Hakone area by charter coach offering views of Lake Ashi & Mt Fuji, the Hakone Tokaido Checkpoint, Gora & the beautiful gardens of the Hakone Museum of Art before arriving at Yumoto Onsen for a night in a traditional Japanese ryokan inn and opportunity to soak in the hot spring bath.

Day 6: Hiroshima

Continuing on to Hiroshima prefecture by bullet train, sightseeing will begin with the UNESCO World Heritage Hiroshima Peace Park & Museum.  Two nights in Hiroshima will be spent at the Prince Hotel offering scenic views over Hiroshima bay.

Day 7: Day Trip to Miyajima

 Travel across Hiroshima Bay to Miyajima Island featuring the magnificent World Heritage Itsukushima shrine & giant torii gate appearing to rise from the water.   After visiting the impressive Senjokaku wooden hall & having a look back in time at the Museum of History and Folklore there will be free time to explore, have lunch & stroll the shopping streets before heading back to Hiroshima city by ferry and train to visit the beautiful Shukkein Garden.

Day 8: Matsuyama & Dogo Onsen

 A ninety minute boat ride from Hiroshima across the inland sea will take the tour to Matsuyama on the island of Shikoku where the next two nights will be spent at Dogo Onsen, Japan’s oldest & one of the most famous hot spring towns.  There will be free time to explore before a Japanese dinner at the traditional Japanese inn and another chance for an onsen soak.

Day 9: Matsuyama

 A novelty steam train and ropeway will take you to Matsuyama castle, one of Japan’s 12 original feudal castles, offering more cherry blossoms and sweeping views of Matsuyama city, the inland sea & the surrounding mountains.  In the afternoon there will be free time to explore the Okaido shopping street leading to the castle and the downtown area.

Day 10: Okayama

Transferring from Matsuyama by train you will cross the Seto Inland Sea again to reach Okayama for a one night stopover and chance to visit Korakuen, considered to be one of the top three gardens of Japan.

Day 11: Kyoto

Arriving in Kyoto by midday will leave the afternoon for sightseeing in the historic Higashiyama area featuring the famed UNESCO World Heritage temple of Kiyomizu-dera offering a view over Kyoto.   Ambling back down the hillside of old alleyways of souvenir & craft shops will lead through to the characteristic geisha district of Gion.

Day 12: Kyoto

 A private coach for the morning will take the group sightseeing, including the iconic golden pavilion of Kinkakuji, and the raked garden of Daisen-in. Moving on to the riverside town of Arashiyama there will be time to view the lovely traditional landscape garden of Tenryuji temple, stroll the famous bamboo grove walk, and have free time to explore the park and shops or wander further afield.

Day 13: Kyoto

In the morning there will be an introduction to Zen meditation & a private tour of the Buddhist temple.  Heading into central Kyoto you will discover the bustling, narrow Nishiki food market street known as ‘Kyoto’s Kitchen’, followed by some free time to explore the shopping area. A highlight of your trip to Japan will be the farewell Japanese banquet style dinner with a geiko (geisha) or maiko (apprentice geisha).

Day 14: Kyoto

This tour finishes after breakfast at hotel in Kyoto. You can fly home from Osaka Kansai International Airport or extend your stay in Japan to travel to other locations and departure points.  You will receive detailed information on how to access to your departure port.

What a smorgasbord of experiences! We were certainly given a unique opportunity to sample the delights that Japan has to offer. Thank you! On reflection it is amazing how many things we managed to do, see, and taste.

An extremely well thought out and executed itinerary, leaves one to enjoy the sensory experience.
And being Japan, if the train is due to leave at 12:36, it leaves at 12:36!
