Local knowledge is the key to the most rewarding travel experiences and this tour has been custom designed to offer you an amazing experience of Japan.  The itinerary takes you through six prefectures of Japan to offer an impressive range of locations, landscape, cuisine, and experiences, along with opportunities to cycle and explore. Accommodation will include western style hotels and traditional ryokans (Japanese inns). Transportation in Japan will include private coaches, subways, local trains, and shinkansen (bullet trains).

This tour is for adults only and is especially suitable for the traveller with no Japanese language ability who is looking for a comprehensive introduction to this unique country with an active cycling component.      The Japan tour will be coordinated and accompanied by an escort who will provide you with all the information you need to understand the locations and the culture and enjoy your trip.  A detailed information booklet will provide information about locations visited and a background in aspects of Japanese history and culture.

Day 1: Meet in Tokyo

Meet your fellow travellers at a ‘welcome’ Japanese dinner.

Day 2: Tokyo

Start the day wandering through an eclectic, antique flea market set in temple grounds before exploring the gardens of Shinjuku Gyoen and visiting the Samurai Museum, a real gem of Shinjuku.  In the afternoon you can see what the Tokyo bicycle and cycle wear shops have to offer before heading off by train to the impressive, Meiji Shrine set in a tranquil forest adjacent to the vibrant and bustling district of Harajuku which will be the last stop this day.

Day 3: Tokyo

No trip to Tokyo would be complete without time to experience the atmosphere of the past at Asakusa in the heart of the ‘shitamachi’ (low area).  Asakusa is home to the ancient, vermillion coloured Sensō-ji, Tokyo’s oldest and perhaps most significant Buddhist temple.   You can enjoy wandering market style arcades of traditional Japanese souvenirs and crafts andfind treasuresin the world’s largest cookware market. Then moving on to Shibuya, known for its youth fashion and culture vibe, you get a great view of the famous Shibuya ‘scramble’ intersection and join the crowds crossing over to mingle in the exciting atmosphere and find an amazing array of shopping opportunities or a characteristic cafe.

Day 4: Fuji/Hakone

Leaving Tokyo by train, the tour will head to the highlands near Mt Fuji to begin a 27km scenic downhill mountain biking course.  Then there will be time to relax in an overnight stay at a traditional Japanese inn and enjoy bathing in the natural hot spring and a Japanese dinner.

Day 5: Hakone/Shiga (Lake Biwa)

The morning will be taken with sightseeing by coach in the natural beauty of Hakone National Park and stops to visit cultural and historic treasures.  Then after transferring by train to Shiga prefecture there will be a leisurely country side cycle around lake Biwa before heading on to Kyoto for dinner and two nights’ stay.

Day 6:Kyoto

A sightseeing cycle tour in this ancient capital will start with the historic east mountain area and wrap around Kyoto visiting UNESCO World heritage & cultural icons, while still offering flexibility to enjoy spontaneous finds and characteristic back streets.  The tour will end in the scenic, riverside district of Arashiyama.

Day 7: Kyoto/Onomichi

In the morning there will be a visit to Nijo castle with its beautiful preserved interiors and famed ‘nightingale’ floors.  Then its back into central Kyoto to explore the amazing culinary offerings at Nishiki Market street and Kyoto culture at the timeless shopping arcades.  Leaving Kyoto by train, the tour will head on to Onomichi for the night.

Day 8: Setouchi

Onomichi will be the staging point for the 70km Shimano Kaido island hopping cycling course across the Seto Inland Sea to the major island of Shikoku. Then there will be time to relax again over a two night stay at a traditional Japanese inn at Dogo Onsen, the oldest and most famous hot spring town in Japan.

Day 9: Matsuyama

Head over to nearby Matsuyama to visit Matsuyama-jo, one of the 12 original feudal castles of Japan in the morning and have the rest of the day to explore the characteristic bath houses, streets, and shopping arcades in the Dogo onsen town or more local cycling as an option.

Day 10: End in Osaka

Head on to the city of Osaka with the option of staying on to sightsee, or explore more of Japan, or depart from Kansai International Airport.
